An eco-friendly stainless steel FDA approved drinking straw has been used in order for the pennant to sit flat. If you want to use the straw for its original purpose, a thin wooden bar would work in the pennant, but probably wouldn't have survived the journey through the postal system, hence the stainless steel straw...
